Flash flooding conditions that could threaten life communities and key infrastructure memories of the pain of hurricane katrina still haunt the city the failure of federal levees left 80 percent of new orleans underwater the storm killed more than 1800 people and left millions homeless here and along the gulf coast officials stress that the city’s hurricane protections have vastly improved since then if ida hits at full strength it will be a Funny Jacko Happy Halloween T-shirt significant test of that system neda taufiq bbc news new orleans well we are just a few hours from the point at which ida is expected to make landfall evacuation orders in place for large areas of the state now this report from thomas shafanaka of bbc weather hurricane ida is bearing down on the coast of louisiana an extremely dangerous hurricane and here it is on the satellite picture you can see a catherine wheel of storms swirling about an eye the center of the storm and just in these last few frames if you look carefully you can see how bright and symmetrical that shield of cloud is around the eye that means it’s an ideal textbook hurricane it’s flourished over the warm waters of the gulf of mexico hence it’s so powerful and here are the key messages landfall sunday afternoon local time as a category 4 with a storm surge of 4 meters or more in the worst area and 2 to 500 millimeters of rain brought by this storm as it moves across the region so here it is the point of impact as it reaches the mouth of the mississippi river and the winds swirling around it also push that mound of water the storm surge up to four meters at the worst so the storm is going to roar ashore and then move northwards through the course of the next few days but on top of that of course it’s a very hot very humid part of the world so with all the flooding the power outages it’s going to be a very nasty place once this storm moves away i’ve been talking to aaron jay jack a storm chaser monitoring the situation from the city of thibodeau in louisiana so right now it’s uh things are still relatively calm the winds are starting to pick up a little bit so we are starting to see the those outer bands are starting to make their way here towards the coast and that eye is well within range of radar you can see it’s a very you know mean looking vicious looking eye uh dangerous cat 4 high end cat 4 hurricane it’s still intensifying too it has the potential to become a cat 5 hurricane even so that’s not out of the question and i’m here in thibodeau uh currently I just looks like it might be a little bit to the west of the eye still in the eye but on that western eye but I might my preference is uh i’m extreme storm chasing so I want to try and get right into the that worst damage uh that damage but the worst winds the most power but which obviously causes damage i’m gonna try and stay out of the damage but uh try and document what happens here and so I may need to shift a little bit to the east i’m looking at raceland uh louisiana but all this area here from anywhere from morgan city to new orleans is under the. Gun here right in the path of this dangerous storm uh category four could go category five so you are doing exactly the opposite to thousands of people why you know that’s just i’ve always been uh fascinated with weather uh i’ve always been i’ve had a love for weather there I like to experience weather and you know my my goal is to be that you know that guy on the ground that’s capturing what’s happening they’re documenting this for history uh for people in the future when they come along they can you know they can see what some of these past hurricanes did uh just watch my footage you know i’m also trying to give that that view to the world you know showing uh what’s happening on the ground as long as I can we’re probably going to lose cell service here i’ll lose my ability to communicate with the world I do have gps capabilities so I can contact loved ones and my my employer my radar in case we do lose power but I just that’s this is what I do you know I like being in it I like feeling it I like trying to be that person that’s documenting it aaron j jack there this is dnn and i’m your host angry cops ac tonight’s top story is the peaceful transition of power from the united states government and its military forces to the afghan national army we go live to our correspondent in the field ac ac are you there yes ac spirits are high here in kabul the capital city of afghanistan as the ana and afghan government prepare to take over and stand on their own two feet remarkable what a milestone now ac has there been any word of any preparations or reprisal for a taliban uprising with military members of the united states exiting this does leave a little bit of a gap only the a a can fail ac I can assure you that that is nothing more than a red herring the president of the united states along with high ranking generals have said that it is highly unlikely that the taliban will be able to overthrow the afghan government and the afghan national army now the taliban have also signed a peace deal with the afghan and us forces and i’m sure that that terrorist. Callie’s brain are dedicated purely to the detection of movement she almost can’t help but pants cats wild ancestors relied on low light vision and the ability to detect movement to stalk prey but these evolutionary adaptations have a downside cats can’t focus on anything closer than around 30 centimeters in front of them but where their eyes fail them cats have another perfectly adapted sense to go in for the kill the team has set up an experiment to reveal just how our cat’s secret weapon works so the camera can do in full HD resolution up to 2 700 frames per second I was thought 2030 times we’ll get it John Bradshaw is hoping these ultra high speed cameras will capture this extraordinary sensory organ in action it really is very very quick I’ve seen still photographs of it happening but there’s nothing like actually seeing the whole motion so I think we got it there but it’s very very very quick John’s trying to observe the cat’s whiskers as they move forward into the attack position let’s just take the toy away for a second and that’s can we ever look at what we’ve just taken okay so here we go the cat realizes the masses within his grass but he wants to know exactly where it is in relation to his mass its eyes give up because they can’t focus very close that’s where the whiskers take over so what we can see here is the whiskers suddenly being swept forward and now the claws are coming into action so we got here look the whiskers are pointing almost directly in front of the cat’s nose it finally is catching them with his claws as he sweeps around trying to catch the mouse but the little muscles at the base of each whisker are really tugging hard to swing those forward completely out of the normal position is this really extraordinarily detailed I’ve never expected to see all of this it’s all seems to take place in about a fifth of a second which just shows how fast cats reflexes really are from the point where they sweep the whiskers forward with the muscles contract and then relax back and the whiskers spring back again the mass doesn’t have a chance far thicker and longer than normal hares whiskers also sit three times deeper in the skin where they attach to nerve endings telling the cat how far each one is being bent back and how quickly their whiskers are the same width as their body allowing cats to navigate the narrowest spaces you cats also have whiskers above their eyes and on their ankles sending them a constant stream of information as they sense the world around them there will be no easy meals on this island walruses are the largest seals in the world they weigh over a ton and are armed with tusks a metre long Music exhausted from his shrim the bear must regain his strength the next day a sea fog shrouds the island the wallace’s sense that they’re in danger using the fog as cover the bear approaches the herd the adults close ranks around their young presenting a wall of blubber and high he tests the man but it stands firmly it appears that the world’s largest land carnivore has met his match Music

Premium This Spring Season will Presents Who Love:
Marmots would now be hibernating the beavers are still active and will remain that way throughout the winter Even when the pond ices over completely they’re still able to swim under the ice to get back and forth to their lodge No one knew exactly what went on inside the lodge during winter so when the beavers were away we installed a Funny Jacko Happy Halloween T-shirt couple of infrared cameras in order to find out A branch from the fridge is being brought back to the lodge for the whole family to feed on And another No wonder they don’t need to hibernate with this ingenious setup The lodge is warm and safe even in midwinter and the only sign of activity in the snug home beneath the snow is hot air rising from the vent at the top Inside our cameras catch a glimpse of what at first sight looks like a very small beaver It’s a muskrat There are a pair of them in here This is a new observation Do the beavers actually know in the pitch blackness that there are strangers among them We noticed that the muskrats regularly left the lodge to forage under the ice And on several occasions they returned a few minutes later with a load of fresh reeds Perhaps the muskrats are paying rent by regularly providing fresh bedding for the lodge Maybe that is why the beavers accept them and even allow them to share their food Our infrared lights however are no longer welcome it seems u s weather forecasters have warned that the storm approaching louisiana could be more powerful than hurricane katrina which devastated new orleans 16 years ago ida is expected to make landfall in the next few hours evacuation orders are in place for large areas of the state wild state while tens of thousands of people are on the move to get to safer areas neda taffy reports from new orleans in new orleans residents prepare for the worst even as they hope for the best it’s 16 years to the day since hurricane katrina devastated the city on this unforgettable anniversary the region is bracing for the landfall of what could be the strongest storm to hit louisiana in more than a century locked everything down moved everything that could blow away uh filled up all the vehicles uh put everything in the freezer have everything ready to go um case way without power a few days because it looks like it’s coming right at us it’s just one of them things you’ve got to live with when you live down here it’s going to come no matter what so we’re going to do the best we can ida’s growing power took officials by surprise many rushed to leave the area but time ran out to organize a mandatory mass evacuation of the city’s 390 thousand residents just two days ago the storm was a tropical depression your window of time is closing it is rapidly closing and just like we said yesterday by the time you go to bed tonight you need to be where you intend to ride the storm out and you need to be as prepared as you can be because weather will start to deteriorate very quickly it’s expected to bring winds as high as 130 miles per hour a storm surge as high as 15 feet in some areas and extreme. Then when the next album comes up say if we don’t have better ideas we use the good ideas we have we tend to say that at the time but I think I mean it depends when we actually go back in the studio but I mean like we had ideas way before and when we came to doing this we didn’t touch them at all so there’s still a lot in the can from previous album we had a few other songs some really nice ones I mean good ones but we just seem to we seem to tire of them very quickly don’t we this one should do something is fresh down your knee and again each time so we probably do feel a lot of traction I do feel sometimes that’s to our detriment because some there’s some great ideas that we sort of forget but we’re always we always seem to get very bored with certain ideas if they’re lying around I think that’s the same virtually with any group or or any act by the time the album comes out and you’ve worked on tracks you’ve had enough of them but they’re fresh in you to the public and then you have to go I’m promoting them I think oh that that’s following me around that other is that I mean is that a pain in people always perceive it publicly is that it shouldn’t be they said what you’ve done the songs you wrote the songs you must like them mmm it’s a double edged sword isn’t it you know because the things which are popular are populating and then it applies to us as well as the public in a way I think am I making sense you’re making sense um what I mean is what of it what I mean is it’s um continuing what Freddie says you know we had all this all these bits and pieces of tracks and some of them were half finished some of them were just an idea and some of them were nearly finished and it sort of happened on its own we you know there are some tracks weeks you always want to get out and work on and so they get finished and there are some tracks which you think well that’s great but I don’t really know what to do with it at this moment so they naturally get sort of left by the wayside so we actually didn’t have an awful lot of decision making to do it a lot of it just happened the tracks which are just bursting to get out somehow get out due to sort of public tomorrow within the group do you have favorites on the other I suppose everybody does I think we’ve hopefully we pick the tracks that fit together best and complement each other to make a good album but I don’t know it’s all so fresh in my mind now I don’t think I do have any particular favorites Asian no I’ll tell you in two years time back on it why did you record the album in London as opposed to going to Montreux and doing in your own studio well we did a indeed salmon did you actually yes so that answers that one in this vide why didn’t you do all of your new album in your own studio mantra well we live in London I suppose in his system we wanted to be it hurt not easy and for change and also I think it took a long while to to get this fun I think we get very irritable when when were in one environment certainly we have in fact we used about three studios didn’t we and that’s that’s a short. To herd their prey the predators raised their huge dorsal fins Music a mistimed strike by one sailfish could fatally damage another but each continually changes its color from blue to striped to black that warns its companions of its intentions and also confuses the prey as the shoal is driven nearer the surface it comes within the range of the sea birds out here in the open ocean there is nowhere for the baitfish to hide Music Music sailfish live a high octane life to survive they must find prey daily so their entire existence will be spent on the move with hiding places at a premium fish will go to incredible lengths to hide down here and none more so than this the pearl fish is vulnerable out in the open so while not feeding it must conceal itself but it has a particular taste in hiding places this is a sea cucumber which feeds on the sea floor its body is basically a living tube it sucks in sand at one end extracts anything edible and passes waste out the other just what the pearl fish has been looking for but not the mouth end it’s drawn to the odor of the other end foreign sea cucumbers are repulsive to most predators so the pearl fish is safe inside it’ll stay there until it’s time to feed again it doesn’t harm its host but the bad news for sea cucumbers is that pearl fish are happy to share their temporary home with others it seems there’s plenty of room for all even when more sea lions arrive they can’t seem to break down the sardines coordinated defenses Music with a shoal this big the sea lions need to isolate a smaller more manageable group of fish but with so few predators the fish still have the advantage Music Applause all the sea lions can do is keep the sardines at the surface and wait for others to join them Music tuna their arrival changes everything Music tuna attacked from below cutting off the sardines escape route down to deep water next to appear sheer waters excellent flyers but also surprisingly agile underwater with so many predators attacking from all sides the advantage starts to shift away from the sardines Applause Music as the fish pack ever tighter their showing strategy now makes it easier for the hunters Music Applause Music Applause Music copper sharks they’ve scented blood in the water Music surprisingly perhaps the predators never attack one another they work together to corral the ball of fish taking turns to grab a mouth Music Applause common dolphins Applause as the show gets ever smaller each sardine scrambles desperately to hide in the middle but now there’s no escape Music a buddhist whale finishes off the feast Music in queues 30 or 40 strong they head for the drop off on the ocean side of the lagoon it seems that they know the way from the overall direction of current and swell which remains constant at this depth lines join together into longer lines sometimes 60 lobsters will be marching one behind the other the migration takes place within a few days each year and then the whole lagoon floor is covered with parallel marching
